Short & pompous old textbooks - 'How to Read and Enjoy Shakespeare' and academic notes for 'Romeo and Juliet', telling pupils what to look for and how they should feel at every turn of the plot, in order to properly enjoy the play. As an actor I frankly feel insulted that my interpretation of a living role ought to take second fiddle to any self-opinionated old Don in his dusty college rooms - but then we never actually saw or acted plays we studied ar school for Eng. Lit in the '60s; text was "enough". Ideal for students who might like an insight into 1930s attitudes - alt. title "How we made the ruffian Bard of Avon into a Proud Academic Symbol of the British Empire". Hoorah! (via Rummij)
